FLIP: How To Replace Carbon Brushes

Do you know how many carbon brushes there are on the Lägler FLIP edger sanding machine?

If you aren’t sure, it’s probably worth a quick check to make sure they are in good working shape. Our one-minute video shows the one tool you need for the job, where the brushes are, what they look like when they are excessively worn, and when they are new.

Our video shows three easy steps for carbon brush replacement.

SIGNS OF EXCESSIVE WEAR

Carbon brushes should be replaced once per year to avoid damage to the FLIP motor. The brushes include safety contacts that automatically shut off the motor when the wear limit is reached.

If the power switch on your FLIP no longer stays turned on and you are needing to hold the switch in the on position, it’s a strong sign it is time to replace the brushes. Continuing to use the FLIP in this condition will lead to switch and motor damage.

Another key sign, if the auto shut off is ignored, occurs when the motor starts to burn. You also might see sparks. As you can guess, your repair costs increase significantly when this happens.

HOW TO REPLACE THE CARBON BRUSHES IN A LÄGLER FLIP

Step-by-step instructions are in the manual that accompanies each FLIP when bought new. Here are the key steps, which are shown in our how-to video:

  1. Unfasten the four screws on top of the FLIP and remove the top cover (handles) from the motor housing.
  2. For each carbon brush, detach the connectors, then gently push the brass, coiling pressure clamp to the side. Remove each worn carbon brush.
  3. For each carbon brush, insert the new brush, holding the pressure clamp out of the way until the brush is in place. Attach the connector.
  4. Re-install the handles/cover atop the motor housing.

MINIMIZE COSTS OF MAINTENANCE Back to the question I asked at the beginning of this post: How many carbon brushes are part of your Lägler FLIP? The answer is two. Don’t forget to check and replace both brushes. Preventive maintenance always is less costly for the bottom line of your business. Some simple math below highlights how much of a difference it will make if you replace your carbon brushes at the right time versus if you wait too long.

A new carbon brush will cost you a little more than $20. So you can plan to spend a relatively modest $45 for two, plus shipping, as applicable. (I also recommend keeping a spare pair of carbon brushes in your truck.)

Compare that to needing to buy a new switch and motor, on top needing a pair of brushes. Those will add about $800 to your bill.

Needless to say, that’s a huge difference. So watch our one-minute how-to video about replacing the carbon brushes in your FLIP. It will be well worth your time.

Where to Buy New Carbon Brushes

As with all Lägler parts, talk with your local distributor. If you are in the U.S. or Canada and you do not have a local distributor, Lägler parts are available online at laglernorthamerica.com.

The part number you need is P1228, if buying online from Lägler North America. Otherwise, use the manufacturer number that is globally recognized: 000.65.84.012.
